Hétéropies is a collective exploration of image-based mediums from five Montreal-based artists. Their exhibition space becomes the zenith of their discussions and questions about their own identity. Hétéropies’ objective is to create a narrative that will regenerate the energy that runs on sharing stories about their countries and celebrating the traditions they left behind.
“Heterotopies” refers to two words. Heterotopia refers to the coexistence of an impossible space of a large number of possible fragmentary worlds. As many of us say when we try to describe what it feels like to have more than one origin, “it feels like I have one foot here and foot elsewhere.
The Challenge
The objective with Hétéropies’ was to design an easy-to-read, easy to carry and inexpensive booklet. The challenge then was to fit all content into a foldable flyer: Meaning and concept of the exhibition, and artist’s bios; both in English & in French.
The approach
Since it was a low-budget project, my research consisted of secondary data collection, such as past catalogues, inspirational research, and background information about the artists and their artworks.
I started by creating a mood board with inspirational images collected. From there, I had to figure out the type of booklet and binding process.
The Results
I always kept in mind what the artist wanted to express: Heterotopia, a concept to describe contradictory spaces within our societies. But for them, it was to explain how they felt being in a foreign country.
And with that in mind, I created a foldable flyer, and I decided to use only typography combined with colour to express that feeling. The only image used throughout the poster and the booklet is a digital mix of the artworks that give readers a sensation of confusion.
